It's all about the day they say.
Reach for the stars.
Never stop dreaming.
Some days I find we are just not thankful enough when we reached that star, crossed that bridge ,faced the day.
For the most part the one thing I enjoyed doing evolved into a full time job and I never thanked me for getting there.
I forgot how much work it was and all the months without a pay check and scrambling to squeeeze another guide trip in.
200 plus days a year on the road doing what most people wish they could do for a day.
Next week is the North West Sport Show in Minneapolis and again I will attend and work the very factories that supported me in my true professional days where time on the water was everything. 200,000 people will pass through the doors and invariably I will know some and recognize others.
What I am thankful for is those charectors whom I got to meet over the years. There's Fat Head Franny, Smokie, Critter, Mr. Pan fish,Catfish Bob,Jim.... several guys with the monikor of "Sticks" and "Mojo",
Guys who's nick names are named after their favorite lure several named "TINY" and a few dozen going by" Musky Chaser".There are the lures themselves with names that would make a mother blush. and Rods that are made from carrot nanofibers , Titanium, Helix coiled, Spiral wrapped, 45million modulus.
I look forward to meeting all 200,000 and hearing there stories and how they would improve this and that. and Did you hear?? In the end it will build my excitement as I too look forward to a new season which is huge since last season was grounded all too early.
I vow to spend as much time on the water even while travels take me to far off towns for meetings as there has also been many invitations to stay awhile and enjoy our fishery.
There are many opputunities to take advantage of and checking things out down at the sport show is a good place to start.
Hope to see you there.

Shoot for Free!!!
http://nssf.org/share/images/MN-ad-large.jpg
If you have never shot a hand gun or long barrel rifle this is the week to try it out in Minneapolis.
NSSF gun ranges across the country have opened their doors to non users to inform them proper use and proper saftey measures.
You do not have to be a hunter to participate.
Give it a try if you have not. You may be surprised.

Rambling Thoughts
There are events in ones life that stay with you through the years.
Those timeless moments, Random acts of kindness, violence, highs, lows.
The First date, The First Kiss, Your first child.
We often find ourselves thinking all we have done is for the right.
Our differences and naiveties are overlooked and we stroke our inner self justifying our actions.
Until that day or moment when the foundation of your beliefs gets taken for a ride through reality.
For some it happens only once in their lives for others there are several reaffirming moments which keep them
from getting side tracked and becoming more focused or lack of focus in that matter.
Taking these moments and events for granted is natural and is hard to avoid when one is young and see'e themselves as invincible.
Age,Action and Decision lead to wisdom?
Think about it.
We have all known someone who has a great vision of wisdom and helpful advice .
We have relied on it.
Banked on it.
Lived by It.
Modeled ourselves.
Actions helped support and shape these views and reinforce what we have been told.
We embrace the wisdom and hang onto it until we ourselves reach that age and pass along this wisdom again.
The list of people whom help shape ones thoughts is said to be small.
As I thought of this it became obvious to me that it isquite the opposite and all encompassing.
Of course there are those in which I have met that left a lasting impression.
Then there are those that we cannot recall until some event occurs and we are brought back in time to an event that does not make sense but now has clarity.
These are the ones I think really define us as a people and a person.
These tiny little events and acts that made us stop for a moment and say WOW!
Now when I hear that compliment regarding my charector and/or action I find myself wondering where I learned it.
Well I can tell you that it started in a samll house.
Located in a small town.
Surrounded by good neighbors
Embraced by good teachers
Close friends.
Little known acquaintances.
A Chance encounter.
From;
Women,Men,
Religious Leaders
Business and community leaders.
clubs, groups , orginizations
camps and shacks.
and on and on and on.........
A diverse group of indivuals and families whom accumulated all their wisdom and passed along to us with no fanfare or ceremony.
How do you really thank all those whom have touched you in some manner.
Many are gone.
Moved.
Some are still there.
But we can all make a difference if we just pass a little of our wisdom on to our kids.

Show season thoughts
Rock Lobster,
Show season well on the way and for the most part things are well.
People are getting out of the caves and thinking spring.
Rods are selling.
Reels are selling
Nets are selling.
I assume people will fish, but as I found that some people shop for a different reason.
Now I have noticed that I recognize familiar faces each year at the shows, returning to see what is new or just getting out.
I was not quite ready for collectors though.
A new or maybe not so new breed of shopper who shops for the sole purpose of collectiing.
The old gentleman from Milwaukee whom I see three times a season is a show groupie and collector.
He shops for deals and expresses loyalty but admits to having a few of the competitors products also.
Some rods he uses dome are just for display.
The net collector baffles me though because the nets in which i represent are high end.
But I was not prpared for the conversation of whats new and the conversation which ensued.
This gentleman has all 10 of my nets which is a slight investment.
He was concerned that I did not have one net size ,which I explained was discontinued and replaced with a new size.
His question was if the discontinued net had any value and what the new net would cost.
Now the color changed on the new net and this was also a concern but opened up the door of opputunity as the next question was if he could get the other nets in that color.
Am I to assume this man knows something that I do not as to the true valu of the product which I treat rather harshly some days in my day to day displaying of the product.
The drama will continue as he took detailed notes and said he would be in touch.
My other observation watching the crowds move about was the lack of beer, booze and wine.
Prices?
Tightened enforcement?
Word getting out about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Much more coffee, tead, flavored waters and soda.
This for us is unfortunate as the number of over served customers whom provide hours of entertainment at these shows has plummeted like the stock market.
I am humored so easy.
My final observation for now is the lack of fisherman interested in being Staff members of a factory.
Representing products in which they have been loyal to.
from several dozen request a show to two in the last two.
Times they are changing.
Priorities change.
Values shift.
Money is diverted to more practical expenditures.
But nothing like an outdoor show to get people thinking of spring.
See you at the sport show.

Duluth Sport and Camping Show.
Madison Fishing Expo
IFALLS

Amazes me that every year these shows seem like a reunion aas you run into the same people.
They come to your booth to say hi and let you know how their family is doing and share their latest fishing tales.
I appreciate the older customers whose stories will be forgotten but they take the time to share with me , complete stranger.
I will post pictures at a later date.
Jimmy Big time is my favorite TV personality .
His look at the Fishing and Hunting business is funny to say the least.

Not quite an Ansel Adams but it was quite intriquing at the time.
What you do not see is the frost build up from the rain and sleet.

The season Starts
The season is upon us.
Like it or not it is time to take the note book out and review FAQ's
from each of the factories and wonder how many times a single question can be asked.
The groupies whom you will see not only on an annual basis but once the show starts you will see them everyday.
Normally I look forward to the show season with a renewed freshness for the upcoming season but this year it is with some reservation. It is know doubt that those who know me are aware that 2009 was an extremely long and difficult year in which found some serious re-evaluation of priorities.
The countless nights in hotels are at the top of the list along with the bad show food with the exception of Duluth where Porketta sandwiches can be found. The long days will be a test and the five week non stop travel are not the perfect scenario in which one should go back to the job. But we are all Living the Dream!!
I sincerely look forward to seeing old friends and working with the dealers whom so faithfully stock the product I represent and no show would be complete without hearing the success stories from last season.
The Schedule:
February 12-14 Milwaukee Musky Expo ( StowMaster, Lamiglas)

You may notice some serious over lap and wonder How can he be in so many places at one time.
I wonder myself and will cross that bridge when I get there.
This is a good time to shop as you will never find more answers than at a show and you will save money buying at the shows as this is where the biggest discounts, rebate offers are traditionally found.
See You at the Sport Show

First Rain Than Cold, Why not cook
A Cold Winters Day Means Comfort
First it rained. I decided to read a book.
Then the cold. I decided to cook.
Read a more involved recipe in the Mafia Cook Book.
It sounded good but I wanted more vegitables involved.
With what I could find in the house without stepping out into the elements.
1 pound ground Pork
2 cloves of garlic minced/chopped
1 small onoion chopped
Salt
Pepper
Butter
Olive Oil
Mozzeralla, Asiago, Parmesano Cheese.
Froozen Veggies thawed( 1 bagItallian Garden Mix)
1 Froozen Pie Crust Thawed.
Pre-Heat the oven to 400.
Meat:
In a skillet over medium heat
Heat the Butter and oil ( 2 TBS of each)
Add onion and garlic and cook until soft .
Crumble the pork into pan and break up.
Season with salt and pepper.
Cook until browned through and no pink remains.
Taste
Drain and set aside.
( My thought was to add wine but I was out)
Drain the veggies and place in a seperate bowl.
Salt and Pepper to taste.
Incorporate 2 TBS of butter into the vegitables.
add meat and mix the ingredients thouroughly.
The heat from the pork mixture will help warm the veggies.
Carefully unroll the piecrust one at a time(package comes with 2).
Generously scoop the filling onto one half of the crust and cover with a handfull of the cheses.
Fold the Pie crust over the filling and seal the edges with a fork.
Using a knife make some vent holes.
I brushed a little melted butter over the top so it would aid in browning the crust.
Repeat this process with the other crust.
Note:
I just used what cheese we had in the fridge since it was bitterly cold and icy out.
therefore the three different cheeses in my case.
I did not want it too cook and crust fast so I used a stone pizza dish which has remained idle in my kitchen for some time now.
Place on center rack of oven and bake for 30-40 minutes.
It was around 35 for mine to reach the desired browned crust look.
I ate mine without gavy but my daughter made some pork gravy and added to hers.
The balnce disappeared without comment.
I will assume since I was asked what it was I can make it again but will try some wine in the pork mixture.
Baisically a pot pie in pie crust. very good and not overly filling. left you wanting more.
I also think you could serve this with a red sauce side.

SHOT Show
Slightly disappointed in the coverage of the event by the official sight and the number of New products given to the organization to display on the site. Undoubtedly it was a good show for all and now we prepare for Spring and Fall Hunts.
Guns,Ammo and the accessories that go along with this category will remain strong as well as those items that allow you to enjoy and take advantage of the outdoors.

Part 4
The coffee carafe is rinsed and never washed so there is the remnant of countless pots of coffee which have been served marked by the stain which is amazingly near or at the same level indicating that the exact amount of coffee is brewed every time. Once the coffee is ready it is served in one of a variety of cups which lay underneath the bar and are used for the specific purpose of this daily ritual. Some are personalized with a name ,some with slogans and some ended up there from other establishments. The latest editing of the Hibbing and Duluth papers lays on the bar and are sectioned off so each member of the coffee posse can dissect the news and report it to the other. Opinions are often and expected to be interjected and it is noted that as one gets older the less worry of what other people will think of your opinions. Most guys will just nod their head in agreement or acknowledgment that it was heard.
Notes are compared and daily tasks are discussed. A trip to the drug store, grocery store and Doctors Off ices is the trifecta. All three even though up there in years pride themselves as being able to keep their driveway and walks clean and wonder about the ambition displayed by the younger generation which
is never and will never live up to or meet their expectations.
By the time most normal people are thinking of waking up or just rising the coffee posse is breaking up for the day. Nothing happened and all is safe on this watch. Rudy will walk home if the weather is nice or Jerry will give him a ride home and double check on the next days schedule.
Once in the house he will walk to the stove where the small sauce pan sits and fill it with water placing it back on the stove top to heat up. This always has been amazing to me since he is legally blind and out of habit or practice it is as automatic as breathing. No measuring devices or aides just do it.The water boils and he walks the water to the bowl placed at the table which already has the instant oatmeal in it and pours the water over it gradually while stirring with the other hand and arriving at the right consistency. A half a banana is on the table and this is eaten only after the oatmeal is eaten. The next course is toast and it will vary but for the most part two pieces lightly uttered with jam or creamy peanut butter for variety.
Once breakfast is complete the dishes are placed on the counter top to await washing or are washed at that time depending on how busy he may be.The table is cleaned up and the cards come out. Well worn and faded but the only deck that will satisfy his needs because the numbers are large. Solitaire is the game of choice and it is a daily battle to see if he can outwit the deck, At one time he kept track of wins and losses but the game is now beyond that and is part of his routine which for some seems boorish but for him means freedom and Independence.Just as the shoveling and the meeting of the coffee posse. He would rather be doing something else, hunting, cutting wood, building shelves and cabinets for his grand children, traveling, one of the many things he used to be able to do so freely but are now just part of his memory and the card game helps keep that edge so he can continue to talk of those days gone by.
Mom is usually up by this point and t she will assist him while he checks his blood sugar and tracks his pills for the day. errands may be discussed and than he will retreat to the recliner where the well worn remote will be used to turn on Emirle Live followed by The Price Is Right. Not the same as when Bob Barker ran things but still his favorite. The days can blend together until one sits back and realizes that this is not surviving but living. Everyday brings a purpose and regardless if it is mundanely routine or not it is living.

Home
Morning comes early in the house .
The floor creaks and shows its age as his feet slide into the slippers placed a the side of his bed that he has shared with the same woman for sixty four years. The house with a history as Rich as the man rising and the women yet laying, yet again another day has passed and a new one begins.
Lying in bed you are for warned that someone has awaken and is moving about the house. The carpeting muffles the sound of the floors creaking as you can hear the individual steps and movements starting his routine as he has so many times before with a trip to the bathroom.
Flushing the toilette has never been a private or quiet affair in their house as the sound starts as a low rumble and builds to a crescendo of volume that sounds is if it is a rocket being launched into space and in reality it is a launching but not of that magnitude. The pipes echo as if letting you know it is a long way to where ever it is going. One is not sure if every ones toilet sounds the same or if it is the nature of their house laden with cast Iron pipe copper wiring covered by cloth and insulation which includes paper and ground pellets of some unknown origin.
The floor is alive again as he walks to the sink and washes his hand and face to freshen up. He stares out the window overlooking the yard which is now covered with a blanket of snow. As a draft of cold air seeps through the window sill of the aging house one can only wonder what he is thinking as he pauses before pouring water
into a plastic cup. First to Rinse and the next drink is to wash down the morning pills which help his day to day existence.Than the floor comes alive again as he walks back to the bedroom to dress in the dark. He is used to dressing in the dark as to him and through his eyes it is the same thing he sees when the lights are on and that is nothing. Years of welding without protection is what he will lay blame for his restricted vision but on his best day he can see as good as any person with 20/20 vision. Call it selective vision just as he chooses to not hear and shuts off his hearing aid. Not now though as he places the hearing aides in turning up the volume as
makes sure his bowl, spoon, glass, banana, and instant oatmeal package are where he placed him the night before.
"Sometimes she moves this stuff around,I know it".
" I found my spoon on the other side of the table once."
Blaming it on mom is a common occurrence now as she is conspiring some how to toy with him and keep him from his routine. But now he moves again through the kitchen and into the living room where he can peer through the front door waiting for his friend Jerry to pick him up for the short ride to the bar.Jerry and he are about the same age and Jerry's driving ability could be challenged as his hand is riddled with arthritis that permanently keep his fingers clenched. His last driver also ailed and in the end had to quit driving as he drove down the highway the wrong way to their coffee haunt.
One might wonder as to the bar at five thirty in the morning.
The spot has changed over the years from Helen's Cafe, Country Kitchen,McDonald's and for those guys who get up way to late you can stop at Tom and Jerry's at 8 A.M. He would rather however be with what is left of his nearest and dearest friends the remnants of his youth of better days and good times that found them all meeting for Happy Hour not morning coffee. But coffee is it. They will unlock the doors to the bar if they are not unlocked already get a fresh pot of coffee going and place three cups on the bar as Rom's will soon be there to join them. Two cups are coffee only and one gets a little extra kick added to start the day. The TV is turned on and volume is turned to the highest level. No argument about what station it is the someone every time because it gives the weather report first. I have wondered why the weather is so important when there is nothing to plan for but as one finds it is always of grave local concern as to what might be able to accomplish if the weather is good.............

ATA
Attended the Archery Trades Association Show in Columbus Ohio this past week.
For the first time in a few years I was actually excited.
The Bow manufactures took an aggressive look and amped up the designs.
Will cost you more in some cases but the bows were eye popping.
Lots of film your hunt accessories on the market for those Ted Nugent wanna Be's.
Camo, Camo, Camo
This category also had some really good entries.
Some new safety harness systems out that are less cumbersome than the vests and very durable.
Hard cases over soft.
I was not expecting to post anything about this show as it has not been worth it in my opinion over the last few years.
Sorry no pictures but I will post about GWS new Nova Sight in the near future.

The storm of the century came and went without much a fuss.
Santa Clause came to town and delivered for all the good girls and boys .
Plans went through for most and were postponed, cancelled, re-worked or otherwise fit in.
Our family saw the dreaded double postponement due to the weather delivering not only a punch here but there so travel became treacherous and common sense said we can do this later.
This provided a re opportunity to spend time with just my bride and girls.
Christmas eve saw plenty of snow and my neighbors were of great help in getting my long driveway cleared. They were rewarded justly with home made sugo fresh from the cooling tray to jars which merrily made their way down the drive way.
After warming up and eating a bit we constructed a Ginger Bread House that my daughters agree is quite ugly but tasty.
Gnocchi, Polenta, Sugo, Bologonese served with the meat that cooked along with the sauce was not only tasty but disappeared quite quickly but still left room for dessert. A family game and a classic Christmas movie as well as Mid Night Mass rounded the day off and everyone retired full and tired.
Christmas day found us opening gifts over coffee and cocoa and lounging until we attacked the driveway which took the better part of five hours creating huge appetites which needed taking care of.
Chicken,Beef,Pork, Potato's,veggies and dessert followed by movie night and reading in my favorite chair rounded off a most unusual be memorable Christmas. So much fun we had as we repeated our efforts on the 26Th until the girls looked restless and we cut them loose but to my surprise they worked together learning their new I Pods.
So, thank you mother nature and hope to see my family for New Years.

Home: Part 2
Dinner can be just as tasking as morning coffee but a bit more private as it is usually just Mom, Dad and myself. Conversation can be all encompassing but mostly revolves around what the girls are up to and dad and I discussing a recipe or a ball game. It is not a written rule nor does mom always expect one to be on their rigid schedule but it will be assumed that dinner will be served at four thirty and tardiness is not well accepted and one will hear about ones willingness to be tardy.
As I found out today relying on intelligence Brother Mike relayed to me indicating Mom and dad were expecting me much later. I chose to stay awhile longer at Happy Hour enjoying another twenty ounce jug of tea and talking with Black and the unexpected arrival of Roger whom I have not seen in some while.
At fifty four has some of the most perfect hair I have seen. In fact him and his friend Ron are known as the hair brothers. For it is a well established observation that during the hunting season that we can make a push for deer that would make General Patton proud of our physical ability and never give up attitude. Upon completion we may have made a push of up to one plus miles through young aspen and pine growth along slopes and river bottoms and as us mere mortals are disrobing wet clothing for dry Roger and Ron do the head sweep with their fingers acting as combs and their hair is perfect and there is no sweat.
Roger and I catch up on matters and wish each other Happy Holiday Greetings, glancing at the clock I figure i would make it home on time for dinner. arriving home a mere ten minutes behind schedule to mom already cleaning up the kitchen.
Sitting down all is quite and mom lets me know that I am late and she will need to warm up dinner and I will need to wait a bit longer. Knowing one has already blown the ground rules one must sit and wait but it will be worth it.
The portions have shrunk considerably from the days of every recipe in the house was for twenty people. But Rigatoni with red sauce and homemade meat balls along with salad and in my case juice is great when it is made from the heart.
From the dinner table dad exits and retires to the chair in front of the television and is intent on catching the news. At this point the hearing aide is off or adjusted too low and the television thunders with noise. I do not recall Kiss AC/DC Van Halen or the Who concerts i attended ever being this loud and to add to the decibel level is that the commercials are automatically louder by design.
My usual plan is to hang in the kitchen with mom and read the Papers to catch up on anything I may have missed and asked mom if anyone I know has been arrested as this is here favorite part of the paper although she will not admit it and will comment on how the world is falling apart. it is probably a good thing that they do not have a computer as she would lose all hope in man kind.
Dishes done Mom will retire to the couch and catch the weather and they both settle in to watch Wheel of Fortune as Vanna still turns letters and looks amazingly well as I realize she has been on Television for 25 plus years causing a sigh as I realize than that I too am that much older. A quick channel change to get the lottery numbers which has become dads twice weekly routine.
Carefully concealed in a vinyl bi-fold document holder lays the lucky numbers in which remain the same and have never been changed. He presents the card to the cashier at the local pump and munch on Wednesday and Friday while picking up milk because it is the best price in town. I have never seen the numbers but have been responsible for picking up tickets when dad has been under the weather or not in the mood to make the journey down town. His numbers have never been called but he has had some small monetary awards for putting together three numbers and roles that back into tickets for the next drawing.
Game shows and lottery complete and no professional sports of interest on the television Bed time comes early allowing Mom to catch up on some of her favorite programing. I retire to my bedroom as the day proved to be long and physically i was tired and ready to read and sleep.
From the room I hear soft music coming from the television and realize mom is watching figure skating, Her favorite. You can see it in her eyes as she is in complete unison with the dancer on the ice. I believe that as a young lady growing up in France that she probably dreamed of dancing on the ice as any young girl dreams of being a ballerina or a singer. Some days it is hard to imagine that our parents were once much younger and had dreams of being many things or going many places and one must ask if they they have accomplished what they once dreamed of doing.....

Home: Part 2
Home: Part 1
Waking up in a fog has become a normal part of my everyday.
Waking up stiff and sore has also become a regular part of my days.
But in return I have slept better than any other time that I can remember.
So after being homeward bound since October I felt the urge to leave the security of the nest, spread my wings and fly.
My travel took me North to Duluth with 2 mandatory rest stops which were needed.
Sitting is not necessarily the problem as is the motion and constant and rhythmic slap of the tire on the cracks and expansion joints of the highways and by-ways of Minnesota. The motion causes stiffness and stiffness causes discomfort and the two combined crate stirring and the body must stop for at that point I am no longer in control of what is ordinary in the world. My body on the other hand is really good at communicating it's feelings to how I am treating it.
Duluth went fine and was stop number three and I was back on the road at lunch time.
Hunger set in which happens quite quickly these days and in my rush and excitement of impending travel I forgot to pack my lunch. Fast food was not an option as it was banished from my life in May and has probably been a good choice since.
Healthy snack at a gas station would have to do and my thoughts immediately went to the biker who now teaches other bikers how to eat healthy meals at service stations!
Not a bad idea since I spend quite a bit of time traveling. You could possibly eat really healthy if you tried but the odds are not in your favor of low calorie healthy food that will fill your hunger needs.
An Apple, A Banana and a Pop Tart were my choice, Not bad and if were not for the fact that the Pop Tart s were sitting on the counter near the cash register I would have been home free. Better yet it could have been a Pop tart without Frosting or sprinkles. Yes Sprinkles, the delectable and festive looking clusters of color embedded into the vanilla frosting which snap when bitten into.
Well any how it would do as I knew that Mom would have something really good on the menu for dinner and she would make a little extra cause she had company coming.Although it be her son it was company and special treatment is a must. A Sunday dinner mid week.
The snow of and fog of the early morning had been replaced with the warmth of the mid afternoon winter sun. It was 14 degrees which was 28 degrees warmer than the day before.Funny how 14 degrees can feel so warm but 28 degrees is 28 degrees.
A quick stop in Virginia and onward to Chisholm with my final stop before home would be Tom and Jerry's. The unofficial Welcome Wagon of the Range town.
The corner of the bar was the usual suspects that gather twice a day for comrade and fellowship of other men, sharing news and views of the morning paper or the happenings that took place in between visits. All retired, All busy in their own right But all enjoying the fruits of their 30-40 years of labor.
No bank executives, Real estate Moguls, Land Barron's. mostly Miners and Trades Men who worked for one of the many mines around the area.arriving for the afternoon meeting there was beer in hand versus coffee from the morning, although coffee is usually available. The coffee its self is some of the best in which has passed these lips and I have had coffee in a thousand different places over the years of traveling and a cup of Tommy's brew is worth the trip.Big City types would pay a premium price for this coffee that requires patron to throw a buck in for a bottomless cup and the stuff in the decaf pot is the same as the non decaf.
The conversations vary and are ever changing and cover the entire spectrum of topics, social issues, local gossip and of course politics. Today's conversation revolved around Ice conditions and early fish reports and a few stories from the
summer past.
Normally after such a trip I would be kicking back and knocking down a few beers and planning my relaxation techniques for the next few days but today a Ice Tea would suffice versus Lemon aide. The banter of comments and jokes makes its round as I am warned against drinking and driving all loaded up on sugar drinks.
The endowment makes anyone who left this town after graduation and returns at home and many of classmates and acquaintances have ended up coming home and working for Tom and Jerry while they re-group or take care of Mom and Dad, recover from marriage or lost job or business. A safety net as I have never experienced but is also comforting to know as in these unsteady times, at times wonder if that could be me behind the bar.
Finishing my Green tea I decide I have been over educated for the time being and need to venture the few block to Mom and Dads House and plan the errands which will need to be run the next day.It is also the time to smell the aroma of something fresh and home made being cooked just for me. Naturally hunger sets in immediately and unabated as every room within the house has the aromatic smell of Pot Roast, Potato's and Bread.
Settling in as a guest in mom and Dads domain requires a staging process that needs to followed to the smallest detail as the heat within the house is treated as if it were a nuclear reactor and if any heat is lost, wasted or otherwise set free it is cause for alarm and a near melt down as warnings are voiced from both parties to hurry up so it stays war. The towels rolled up for the base of the doors to keep heat from escaping must be replaced immediately and without reservation or else they may come and inspect to ensure its precise placement.
The Bags get placed on the front stoop and than one enters through the back door since the center of activity is the kitchen. One must announce the entrance and exchange greetings and than immediately announce the plan to bring the bags in to the compound. Homeland Security could take some valuable lessons from our parents
rules of the house.
Enter the front porch which is unheated closing the door behind you and moving the rolled towel towards the TV so it will not interfere with the baggage process. Open the front doors and move bags from the front stoop into the porch area making sure no snow enters the area which could contaminate the sterile environment which during the winter months resembles a museum as ever thing has been prepped, covered and put in its winter place.
Now, Shoes need to be removed and the entry door must be cracked not opened widely thus creating a vacuum which sucks the cold air into the living room and sending it rushing into the kitchen. Bags and personal items are than stacked at the base of the stairs and arranged in a fashion as to make the next step of dispatch as smooth
and error free as possible.
Shoes are now picked up and carried through the house and walked through the kitchen where another door needs to be opened to the UN-heated and or insulated back porch which also serves as a fine food cooler and wine cellar.Shoes can be placed in the visitors shoe section which is designated by the small area rug which is placed on the all season carpet next to the home shoe area which is a nice series of wooden shelves and a plastic tray sitting on a small area rug sitting on the all season carpet.
Upon re-entry the door need to be checked to make sure it is closed securely and and no cold air is allowed to enter.it helps if mom sees you have done this and allows her to relax somewhat.
Back through the kitchen and to the base of the stairs where the bags await their journey to the rooms. If their is numbers of bags an assembly line is made and the bags are sent up the stairs to the landing and than placed in the appropriate room were they will await the proper placement as to not impede movement or require attention from mom if she so happens to make it up stairs.
While moving baggage one also checks the floor for sounds and squeaking to see if any new booby traps have been set to catch movement from below if one chooses to stay out late or the kids decide to stay up and play rather than go to bed three hours earlier than they normally do.
The rooms have not changed much in the thirty years in which I have been gone. The bed Spreads are the same, the pictures, the books, pillows ,sheets. all the same as the day I left for college. The beds are made tightly and one must use care as to not disrupt thee tension setting as you will never be able to re-set the covers as tight as they were when you arrived causing them to be washed as required whether used or not.Bags go on the floor being careful not to move the area rugs as they are carefully measured after each visit and compared to the prints stored in the banks of moms memory. If there is anything moved or not replaced it will be used against you and family around the coffee table. This is where all your inequities as a son or daughter get revealed in your absence in the form of critique or periodic review as I refer to the process. Sometimes the pressure of this event causes individuals to fold and leave the room regrouping in the living room which will be noted and cataloged.
One must be strong and take their seat and participate knowing that you are under tight scrutiny from the boss. John Gotti would have crumbled under the pressure and one should have tough shoulders as you must let things roll off them after they hit you.As most of us have found with our family is as they get older they open up and not always in a good manner. They speak their mind which is very commendable but yet at times uncomfortable.

A day that will live in infamy.

Bitter cold morning.
And finally to our friend "Bonzo"
whom we are reminded of every time we travel home for the holiday or weekend
The cross on the side of the road will never let you forget him.
But will remind you of how quickly it can change.
God Bless
